A historic milestone is on the horizon for Klaarstroom as the Municipality nears completion of paving the town's last remaining unpaved gravel roads. This project, funded through national infrastructure grants and Municipal co-funding, will make Klaarstroom one of a few rural towns in the Western Cape boasting a road network consisting of 100% surfaced roads.
The initiative addresses long-standing challenges of dust, accessibility and storm water control — particularly during heavy rains. The project, overseen by the Municipal engineering team, is expected to be completed during August 2026. It provided employment opportunities to local residents for several months. Mayor Jaquet highlighted the project's role in enhancing infrastructure to improve residents’ quality of lifeand the town's appeal as a tourism destination, complementing Klaarstroom's historic charm and proximity to Meiringspoort.
In Leeu-Gamka, the second phase of upgrading water and sanitation infrastructure is progressing steadily, with construction underway for a 1-megalitre reservoir. This phase follows the upgrading of the water treatment plant to enhance water quality. The additional reservoir will increase the town’s water storage capacity, ensuring a more reliable supply for its residents, particularly during dry seasons when boreholes are under strain.
The project, funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation, addresses Leeu-Gamka’s reliance on limited borehole resources. The second phase is on track for completion by early 2026. During the visit, Councillors inspected the construction site and commended the project team for their efficiency and the municipality’s focus on sustainable development.
