New water meters

Many advantages

Infrastructure & Development Service Delivery
Former school principal, Mr Sammy Delport, recently took advantage of the municipality’s offer to install new prepaid water meters free of charge. For him, the choice was easy. “You’re not always at home when the team comes to read the meters, and then an estimate is made. With the new meters, estimates and manual readings are eliminated,” he explained.

“When I saw the invitation from the municipality, I applied immediately. You can always be assured that it works out cheaper. After the installation was completed, they told me to load about R10 worth of water. I thought that was a bit little, so I bought R20 instead. To my surprise, I received 2,900 litres of water for R20 — more than enough for a household. The system teaches you to use water sparingly and not to waste it. I would strongly recommend that everyone take advantage of the municipality’s offer to install the meters for free and start enjoying the benefits. We can clearly see the difference in our wallets.”

Mr Delport also said that the entire process was handled extremely professionally — from his application at the Technical Department to the installation of the meter. “I must applaud the municipality for their professionalism, friendliness, and helpfulness throughout the process. The workmanship was also of exceptionally high quality. In my opinion, everyone in Prince Albert who is serious about saving money — and water — should make use of this offer. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Installation of pre-paid water meters and the process flow

What is the pre-paid water meter project?

The pre-paid water meter project is an initiative to replace traditional water meters with pre-payment type water meters, which will help the customer to monitor and manage their water usage daily and save them money. What are pre-paid meters, and how do they work?

Pre-paid water meters are digital devices that accurately measure

and monitor water usage, just like electricity meters. They help residents to manage usage of water better. The customer purchases water units in advance, and once the units are finished, the customer must top-up.

How do I purchase water units?

Once your meter has been installed you will be provided with the meter number and the keypad digital device which will be used to enter all the tokens of pre-paid water units that has been purchased. Units can be purchased from online vendors like Prepaid24 (electricity.co.za), local vendors like Spar, Usave, the Municipality, as well as banking apps.

How do I load my units on the meter?

Once you have purchased the units, you must load the digits on your digital keypad. The meter will show ACCEPTED, then the units will reflect on your keypad screen.

Whats going on with our power

Whats going on with our power

We continue to experience challenges with our electricity supply. Here is why, and what is being done to improve the situation. Our electrical supply comes from Eskom via a 130-kilometer line called Farmers Line 2, starting in Leeu Gamka. The “T” off along this line to PA is 50 kilometres from Leeu Gamka. This line powers over 30 users, including our town. The catch? If something goes wrong anywhere along this entire feeder, it can knock out power for everyone, including PA. Due to the rugged terrain along the route, identifying the cause of faults can be challenging and time consuming.
