Prince Albert’s timeless beauty took centre stage when KLM, the Dutch airline, filmed a captivating one-minute video montage to showcase the charm of the Great Karoo.

The Prince Albert Municipality and PATA (Prince Albert Tourism Association) were instrumental in assisting the team to present our town and its surroundings as a must-visit destination for those seeking an experience off the beaten path.

When the international production company, Since ’88, approached local filmmaker Balthazar Bierman of Ethikos Media with their ideas for the KLM advertising campaign, Balthazar immediately said our town was a must. Years ago, Balthazar had worked with the Prince Albert Municipality during the filming of Deon Meyer’s Trackers here, and since then he has had a soft spot for the town.

When he approached our new Municipal Manager, Thys Giliomee, to assist with the filming, our collective team immediately sprang into action with expertise and creativity. The Dutch team had a long wish list of scenes they wanted to capture — including angora goats at sunrise. The team identified excellent locations that perfectly captured Prince Albert’s historic charm, vibrant local culture, and the dramatic Karoo landscape.

A Goat for the Cameras (and a Bit of Fun)
A major highlight was obtaining permission to film at Groot Waterval, a picturesque sheep farm 45 km outside the town. This family gem, with its sweeping views, authentic Karoo hospitality — and, of course, beautiful angora goats — fit perfectly with KLM’s vision.

On 16 May, the team met Terblanche le Grange on his family farm, where they were received like old friends — complete with coffee and homemade rusks. Terblanche was so comfortable in front of the cameras that the producers decided to feature him in an extended interview. Rosa Dieker from KLM said that Terblanche and Groot Waterval were exactly what they were looking for: authentic.

They then filmed at Sophia Booley’s weaving studio, where the focus was on the beautiful finished products made from the silky hair of these goats (yes, it’s hair, not wool). The natural beauty surrounding Prince Albert was also beautifully captured. The KLM video, part of their global campaign to promote hidden gems, promises to raise Prince Albert’s profile and attract travellers eager for authentic experiences. This collaboration highlights our commitment to promoting tourism while showcasing our community’s warmth and heritage.

We thank everyone in our town for their warm welcome to our international and local guests. As we await the release of the video, we are excited about its potential to share Prince Albert’s magic with the world — inviting visitors to discover our starlit skies, rich history, and the soul of the Karoo.
