Prince Albert’s timeless beauty took centre stage when KLM, the Dutch airline, filmed a captivating one-minute video montage to showcase the charm of the Great Karoo.
The Prince Albert Municipality and PATA (Prince Albert Tourism Association) were instrumental in assisting the team to present our town and its surroundings as a must-visit destination for those seeking an experience off the beaten path.
When the international production company, Since ’88, approached local filmmaker Balthazar Bierman of Ethikos Media with their ideas for the KLM advertising campaign, Balthazar immediately said our town was a must. Years ago, Balthazar had worked with the Prince Albert Municipality during the filming of Deon Meyer’s Trackers here, and since then he has had a soft spot for the town.
When he approached our new Municipal Manager, Thys Giliomee, to assist with the filming, our collective team immediately sprang into action with expertise and creativity. The Dutch team had a long wish list of scenes they wanted to capture — including angora goats at sunrise. The team identified excellent locations that perfectly captured Prince Albert’s historic charm, vibrant local culture, and the dramatic Karoo landscape.
A Goat for the Cameras (and a Bit of Fun)
A major highlight was obtaining permission to film at Groot Waterval, a picturesque sheep farm 45 km outside the town. This family gem, with its sweeping views, authentic Karoo hospitality — and, of course, beautiful angora goats — fit perfectly with KLM’s vision.
